Love Canal by Lois Gibbs

Book Cover Proposal

Love Canal by Lois Gibbs is a documentary about a women who shares her story and struggle about her community in Niagara Falls, NY. In 1978 she began her journey to discover that the local elementary school her son was attending was built on this toxic wasteland. Many healthy children were developing disorders and newborns had birth defects. The issue was that The Hooker Chemical Company sold the site for $1 to the City twenty five years ago. This was one of the most devastating environmental tragedies in history and there may be many more similar sites. These dumpsites are like ticking time bombs and who will take ownership if they do occur again? It's a must read for those interested in environmental policy and social justice.

Cy Twombly from Art Institute of Chicago

I thought it would be nice to share some close ups of his work I took myself. Enjoy a few quotes:)

‘To paint involves a certain crisis, or at least a crucial moment of sensation or release, and by crisis it should by no means be limited to a morbid state, but could just as well be one ecstatic impulse.’ Twombly

My line is childlike but not childish. It is very difficult to fake... to get that quality you need to project yourself into the child's line. It has to be felt. (Cy Twombly)

new painting

Hello everyone. I didn't have a chance to post last month so here I am. I've been thinking of including notes or quotes from various readings along with my art. This will be a more comprehensive report of my own views, ideas and interests that may or may not relate. But consider applying the concept and it might just work.

Scott Belsky "Making Ideas Happen"

"Circle of concerns"-all the stuff that worries us- and then a smaller "circle of influence" (within the larger "circle of concerns") that only contains stuff that we can actually control. -spend energy on stuff that we can do something about.
"The whole idea of motivation is a trap. Forget motivation. Just do it. Exercise, lose weight, test your blood sugar, or whatever. Do it with out motivation. And then, guess what? After you start doing the thing, that's when the motivation comes and makes it easy for you to keep on doing it."

This idea is undoubtedly in most of our thoughts but it's very well said.

ending the year 2010!!!

It happens to be the perfect timing to end the year with my last post on the final assignments that made the blog cut..  I had so much fun working on concepts for an original company with so much story!! Im including some ads I did for Dixon Landing Music and some t-shirt designs that may or may not make it to production. They're just variations of what was submitted.

If your interested in rock n roll and the blues you will love their music!! Here's the link to Alex Dixon's new cd (album art by me)

Some wiki- info on Alex's grandfather
William James "Willie" Dixon (July 1, 1915 – January 29, 1992) was an American blues musician, vocalist, songwriter, arranger and record producer.[1] A Grammy Award winner who was proficient on both the Upright bass and the guitar, as well as his own singing voice, Dixon is arguably best known as an acclaimed, prolific songwriter, and one of the founders of the Chicago blues sound. His songs have been recorded not only by himself, or that of the trio and other ensembles in which he participated, but an uncounted number of musicians representing many genres between them. A short list of his most famous compositions include "Little Red Rooster", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Evil", "Spoonful", "Back Door Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You", "I Ain't Superstitious", "My Babe", "Wang Dang Doodle", and "Bring It On Home". They were written during the peak of Chess Records, 1950–1965, and performed by Muddy WatersHowlin' Wolf, and Little Walter, influencing a worldwide generation of musicians.[2] Next to Muddy Waters, he was the most influential person in shaping the post World War II sound of the Chicago blues.[3] He also was an important link between the blues and rock and roll, working with Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley in the late 1950s. His songs were covered by some of the biggest artists of more recent times, including Bob DylanCreamJimi Hendrix,Led ZeppelinFoghatThe YardbirdsThe Rolling StonesQueenMegadethThe DoorsThe Allman Brothers BandGrateful Dead,[3] and a posthumous duet with Colin James.

Incredible!!! Cedric the Entertainer as Willie Dixon and Beyonce Knowles as Etta James play in the movie Cadillac Records(2008) which chronicles the rise of Chess Records. The studio is now called Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation located in Chicago, Illinois.

COLD STONE CREAMERY FUNDRAISER- SUPPORTING MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION

I want to thank everyone who came out to support the world's largest ice cream social. This 9th annual event provided customers of Cold Stone the chance to support Kate's wish.  Her wish was to design her very own flavor for this annual Cold Stone Event. Let me tell you that caramel apple ice cream mixed with apple pie filling, chocolate shaving and graham cracker pie crust was pretty good...

A young boy who came up to give his donation and fill out the paper star asked if he can write a note along with his name..... very sweet:) We also had a ten year old who asked if I would paint lips on his cheeks like he just got a big smooch. Which was really fun to do.

were thankful to..

GPD, OutBack Steakhouse, Cold Stone staff and the young Explorers looking forward to joining the police academy.
